Five Years Out – Progress Report
VIDEO SUPPORTING NEW RESEARCH
On December 3, 2020 three studies will be released by Monash University in partnership with Out on the Fields, and together provide asses the progress made in the last five years, since the Out on the Fields final report was released.
- The first study is the first in the world to statistically investigate whether LGB youth who come out in sport experience more or less homophobic abuse. The study found nearly half of young people were the target of bullying, slurs, assaults, and other behaviors;
- The second study is a global review of research conducted since 2008, particularly since 2015. It found sport leaders have largely ignored their obligation to stop harm from homophobic and transphobic behaviors in sport, and also used ineffective methods to fix this problem (see video)
Timelines of key research and responses of sport bodies were also created. The second paper is part of a special edition of papers that have arrived at similar conclusions, in the the Sport Management Review, the industry’s highest-ranked scientific journal.
