American academic Donald Sabo publishes “Jock: Sport and Male Identity.” The widely cited book is the first collection of papers focused on understanding ‘why’ homophobia/homophobic behavior is so common in male sport. Conformity to gender norms (and men needing to appear ‘tough’) are identified as the main driver, rather than irrational ‘hate’ of homosexuals.
